Healthy Meal Tips
Most of us already realize that we need to eat healthier meals. Unfortunately, one
of the main reasons people don't is because they believe that healthy means bland
or bad tasting meals. The reality is, though, that healthy meals can be just as
tasty and delicious as unhealthy ones. There are so many fabulous cookbooks available
that specialize in healthy recipes, many of which are quick to prepare and don't
require complicated ingredients.
So how can you start preparing healthy meals now? Often, it's as simple as taking
recipes that you already know and love, and substituting a few ingredients. Replace
the dairy ingredients with low-fat varieties, for example. Look for ways to replace
one ingredient with another that's lower in fat or calories.
If you prefer to eat out, then try ordering different meals. Avoid meals with fatty
cheeses or creamy dressings. Instead, look for healthy salads and make sure you
choose a low fat dressing to go with them.
Also, making a healthy meal doesn't mean you have to crunch on a huge plateful of
raw vegetables and nothing else. A healthy, balanced diet involves eating a wide
range of foods so that you get a good mixture of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants
into your body. It's a good idea not to cook your vegetables for long periods of
time in water, because the nutrients get leeched out, but you can certainly steam
your vegetables gently and still gain most of the benefits found in them when raw.
Cutting down on fat is one of the most important elements of preparing a healthy
meal. So look for lean cuts of meat, particularly if you're using minced meat. Add
fish to the menu, and chicken without the skin. Use reduced fat dairy products.
If you're cooking in a skillet, use the minimum amount of oil. Try using olive oil
if you really need to use oil in your cooking. Apply oil to the pan with a brush,
or use a spray, rather than just pouring it in. You can also try using water or
perhaps fruit juice when you're cooking, rather than oil. You can also use salsa
or vinegar on your foods, rather than cream or butter.
Eating healthy meals doesn't need to be a big deal, but you do need to make a few
small changes to your food preparation if you want to make a difference. It might
also be necessary to do a little bit of reading, perhaps check out a few cookbooks,
so that you have more ideas for cooking delicious, healthy meals. Remember, there's
no need to go to extremes, just apply some moderation in what you're already doing
and you'll find it really helps.
